Physical Therapy

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a profession that specializes in the restoration, maintenance, and promotion of the best possible physical function.

What can physical therapy do for you?

  • Help to prevent the onset of impairments and functional limitations associated with various diseases and injuries.
  • Assist with making everyday tasks easier to complete.
  • Improve your fitness level.
  • Improve your sports performance.

What can I expect at physical therapy?

Our PT will examine you and make an individualized treatment plan. Depending on the condition, the length of time for recovery and type of intervention varies. However, each patient will go through the following stages.

Stages of Healing

Recover

  • At this stage, your body is dealing with a lot of pain and inflammation.
  • Physical therapy in this stage will focus on reducing the pain and inflammation, educating you on what may have caused your injury, and eliminating any non-painful dysfunctions that you may have.

Regain

  • Inflammation and pain has greatly decreased and you are feeling pretty good. However, your body is still healing.
  •  Physical therapy will focus regaining your previous level of function by strengthening weak muscles and restoring your range of motion to normal levels.

Return

  • Goal is to get your body beyond where you were before your injury.
  • Physical therapy will focus on teaching you strategies to avoid re-injury as well as set up and review a final home exercise program for you to complete on your own.

Keys to Success

  • Schedule regular appointments and attend them.
  • Make sure that you complete your home exercise program on a regular basis.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about how you are being treated or how often you are being seen…ask your therapist! They want to help you!

Other

  • You will always receive a home exercise program. It can include stretching, strength training, core activation.
  • Treatment may cause mild soreness or swelling. This is normal, but talk to your PT if it bothers you.
  • Will your insurance company pay for your physical therapy?
    • Contact Life Wellness Center for information regarding this.
