WHAT ARE MACROS?
“Macros” is short for macronutrients. Macronutrients are the three main types of nutrients you consume when you eat: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. These are the substances that make up the caloric content of the food that you eat and what gives you energy throughout the day. Your body cannot make macronutrients; they have to be obtained through the food you eat.
What is Protein?
Arguably the most important macronutrient is protein. Protein is composed of amino acids, which are called the building blocks of your cells. Your body’s cells require protein in order to grow and in order to repair itself. Thus, if you are trying to build muscle mass, proteins are essential in order for your muscles to grow and repair the micro-tears you make when you work out.
Proteins, as you can see, are essential to your health and are a must-have at every meal. Luckily, most of us have no problem getting our protein in since protein is found in some of the most delicious foods available, such as meats, fish, poultry, eggs, dairy, beans, and so much more. What is a Carbohydrate?
Carbohydrates are organic compounds that consist of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. In foods, such as fruits and grains, they are the sugars, starches, and fibers. Carbohydrates are your body’s main source of energy (and its preferred source since they are easy to break down). While your body can use protein as a source of energy, it prefers not to since these are harder to digest, and they are more vital to your body. Fat is used as energy as well (which is what you want when you are looking to lose weight); however, fat is only used when the easy source of energy (carbohydrates) are all used up.
That being said, not every carbohydrate is created equal. In fact, there are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. The difference lies in their chemical structure which, on the surface, may not seem like a big deal, but it is when you are talking about how your body can break those down. Simple carbohydrates are easier to digest and are absorbed by your body more quickly than complex carbs.
Most simple carbs are the carbs you find in processed food. They are the predominant makeup of sugars, such as fructose and galactose, and are found in candy, soda, and added syrups. These foods have no nutritional value other than sugar, and are what we refer to when we say “empty calories.”
Complex carbohydrates are found in starchy foods, such as whole grains, peanuts, potatoes, and corn. It takes longer for your body to digest these carbs, and thus they give you sustained energy. In contrast, simple carbs give you a burst of energy and often result in a spike in your blood sugar as well.
What is Fat?
The third macronutrient is fat. Fats are made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms. The purpose of fat is to store energy for later use in your body. Long ago before grocery stores were full of food, humans needed a way to store fat since it often was feast or famine. When you had food, you ate. When you didn’t have food, your body used its fat stores to survive.
There are different types of fats, such as saturated fats, unsaturated fats, and trans fats. While the difference is important, Life Wellness Center in Eagan recommends that the main thing to remember about fats, whether they are the healthy kind or not, is that eating too many fats will put weight on you. This is because fats are just higher in energy than other nutrients, so unless you are super on the go, your body just doesn’t need very many of them.
That being said, cutting out all fats from your diet is not the best idea. Our bodies need small amounts of the healthy fat in order for our cells to function properly and to combat diseases. Some ways our body uses fat include:
